Vizag Suicides: Student's Exam Failure, Woman's Dowry Abuse

Twin Suicide Cases Rock Visakhapatnam, Highlighting Mental Health and Social Issues

In a tragic series of events, two individuals died by suicide in separate incidents within Visakhapatnam, commonly known as Vizag, casting a somber shadow over the city. The local police have launched investigations into both cases, which underscore pressing concerns regarding mental health and domestic abuse.

Student's Despair After Failing Army Recruitment Exam

In the first incident, a 19-year-old student, identified as P. Saikumar, was found deceased at his residence in the Bakkannapalem area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the PM Palem police station. According to police reports, Saikumar was a second-year BSc student who had recently attempted the Army recruitment examination but did not clear it.

This failure reportedly plunged him into a deep depression, leading him to take the extreme step while his family members were away from home. Authorities have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding his death. This case highlights the immense pressure faced by young individuals in competitive exam scenarios and the critical need for mental health support systems.

Woman Allegedly Driven to Suicide by Dowry Harassment

In a separate and equally distressing incident, a 23-year-old woman, R. Prathyusha, died at her home in the Gangavaram locality. Police investigations suggest that her death was a result of alleged harassment from her husband and in-laws related to dowry demands.

Prathyusha had married M. Dhanaraju in 2022, and the couple had a baby boy. At the time of their marriage, Dhanaraju accepted a gift of ₹1.5 lakh from her parents. However, she was reportedly subjected to ongoing dowry harassment by her husband and his family, which she found unbearable. Unable to cope with the abuse, she ended her life. Police have registered a case in this matter and have shifted her body for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigations

In both cases, the Vizag police have taken swift action by registering cases and initiating detailed investigations. The authorities are working to gather evidence and statements from family members and witnesses to piece together the events leading up to these tragic suicides.

  • For Saikumar's case, police are examining his academic and personal history to understand the depth of his depression.
  • In Prathyusha's case, they are investigating the dowry harassment allegations and the dynamics within her marital home.

These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the societal and psychological challenges that can lead individuals to such desperate measures, urging a collective call for awareness and intervention.
