Coimbatore Police Book 62 AIADMK, BJP Supporters for Assaulting DMK Cadres

The Ramanathapuram police in Coimbatore have taken decisive action by registering a case against 62 supporters from the AIADMK and BJP parties. The charges stem from an alleged assault on DMK cadres during election campaigning activities.

Violent Clash During Campaigning

The incident unfolded on Sunday night in the Ramanathapuram area of Coimbatore. DMK supporters were actively engaged in election campaigning when they were reportedly attacked by members of the opposing political groups.

According to police reports, the confrontation turned violent, resulting in injuries to several DMK workers. The assailants not only physically assaulted the DMK cadres but also caused significant damage to the vehicle in which they were traveling.

Police Investigation and Findings

On Monday, the injured DMK cadres formally lodged a complaint with the Ramanathapuram police station. Law enforcement officials immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

During their inquiry, police identified 62 individuals involved in the assault, including 12 prominent functionaries from the AIADMK and BJP parties. The investigation revealed that the attack was allegedly motivated by accusations of cash distribution to voters.

AIADMK cadres claimed that DMK workers were distributing money to voters in support of V Senthilbalaji, who is contesting from the Coimbatore South constituency. They alleged that a substantial amount of cash was being transported in the DMK vehicle.

Evidence Recovered from the Scene

Police examination of the damaged car yielded significant evidence. Officers discovered a bag containing multiple voter ID cards along with Rs 39,000 in cash. This finding has added a new dimension to the ongoing investigation.

The recovery of voter identification documents alongside cash has raised questions about potential electoral malpractices. However, police have not yet established a direct connection between the recovered items and the alleged cash distribution claims made by the AIADMK supporters.

Ongoing Investigation and Political Implications

Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against all 62 accused individuals. The case has been filed under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to assault, unlawful assembly, and property damage.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened political tensions in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the Coimbatore region where multiple constituencies are witnessing intense electoral competition. The involvement of workers from three major political parties - DMK, AIADMK, and BJP - adds complexity to the situation.

Police officials have confirmed that further investigation is actively underway. They are examining all aspects of the case, including the circumstances leading to the confrontation, the validity of cash distribution allegations, and the significance of the recovered evidence.

The Ramanathapuram police have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken against all those found guilty. They have also increased vigilance in the area to prevent any recurrence of such violent incidents during the election period.
