The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) has suspended an employee as an investigation begins into allegations of donation irregularities at the Badrinath temple in Uttarakhand. The decision was taken after a preliminary inquiry revealed discrepancies in the management of offerings made by devotees.
Details of the Suspension
According to BKTC officials, the suspended employee was responsible for handling cash donations and offerings at the temple. The committee initiated a probe after receiving complaints about missing funds and mismanagement of devotees' contributions. “We have suspended the employee pending a detailed investigation. Strict action will be taken if any wrongdoing is found,” a BKTC spokesperson said.
Scope of the Investigation
The BKTC has formed a three-member committee to look into the irregularities. The panel will examine records of donations collected over the past few months and audit the temple's financial transactions. The temple, one of the holiest in Hinduism, attracts millions of pilgrims annually, and donations form a significant part of its revenue.
“The committee will submit its report within a week. We are committed to ensuring transparency in the management of temple funds,” the spokesperson added.
Broader Context
This incident comes amid growing calls for greater accountability in the administration of religious institutions in India. The Uttarakhand government has previously directed temple committees to adopt modern accounting practices to prevent such irregularities. The BKTC has assured that it will cooperate fully with the investigation and implement any recommendations to improve financial oversight.
