The central government has sanctioned Rs 49.22 crore for repair and maintenance work on a 71.60-kilometre stretch of the Mani-Sampaje Road in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. The announcement was made by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on July 7, 2026, following approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Financial approval and tender process
Once the financial sanction and approval of tender documents are received from the ministry, the tender process will be initiated at the earliest, according to a statement from the MP's office. The funds will be utilised for necessary repairs, including resurfacing and strengthening of the road, which is a key link between the coastal region and the Western Ghats.
Strategic importance of the road
The Mani-Sampaje Road is a vital corridor for both passenger and freight traffic, connecting Dakshina Kannada to the Kodagu district and further to Kerala. The road is frequently used by tourists heading to hill stations like Madikeri and by trucks transporting goods such as coffee, spices, and timber. The stretch has been in poor condition due to heavy monsoon rains and increased traffic, leading to frequent complaints from commuters.
Local response and expectations
Local residents and transport associations have welcomed the sanction. "This road is crucial for our daily commute and business. The potholes and uneven surface have caused accidents and delays. We hope the work starts soon," said a local truck operator. MP Kateel assured that the project would be completed in a timely manner, with strict quality control measures in place. The repair work is expected to begin within the next few months, pending final approvals.
