Cockroach Janta Party Leads Protest Against Education Minister Over Exam Irregularities
Cockroach Janta Party Protest Demands Minister Resignation

A satirical online movement that began as a response to remarks attributed to the Chief Justice of India culminated in a physical protest in New Delhi on Saturday. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in examinations. The protest, held at Jantar Mantar, saw a peaceful gathering of hundreds of supporters.

Protest Details and Demands

The CJP stated it would wait for a week for the central government to dismiss Pradhan or seek his resignation. In a statement, the party warned that if no action was taken, the movement would spread across the country. Dipke, who arrived in Delhi from Boston on Saturday morning, posted visuals of the packed protest site on social media, writing: "They said cockroaches won't come on ground."

Initially, supporters were told to gather outside Parliament Street Police Station, but the location was changed to Jantar Mantar after police granted permission. Heavy police deployment, including RAF personnel and multiple barricades, was put in place, with water cannons on standby. Despite the security measures, the crowd swelled, and by 11 am, the site was packed shoulder-to-shoulder.

Cross-Generational Support

While the movement was characterized as a Gen Z phenomenon, the protest drew people from all age groups. Schoolchildren, college students, parents, job aspirants, working professionals, and even octogenarians participated. The common refrain was that the system had become increasingly unaccountable, and repeated examination leaks had eroded public trust in institutions. Elderly citizens, professionals, and farmers' children traveled from different states to join the agitation.

Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was also present alongside CJP members and supporters. Wangchuk had earlier announced that he would undertake a six-week fast if Dipke was arrested.

Atmosphere and Symbolism

Participants carried the Tricolour, copies of the Constitution, and placards demanding accountability. Many wore cockroach masks, carried flowers, and sported T-shirts bearing the movement's symbol. Chants of "Vande Mataram," "sharm karo," and "Dharmendra Pradhan istifa do" echoed through the venue as supporters awaited Dipke's arrival. The demonstration also received backing from university campuses, with members of various student unions and groups showing support.

The protest ended around 3:30 pm after Dipke began feeling unwell.

Political Reactions

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called the protest "negative politics," while the Congress party claimed its youth wing had done much more for students. The movement has been backed by the Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Left parties, among others.

Personal Stories

Pandurang Jadhav, a 50-year-old financial analyst who traveled over 1,300 km from Pune, said he feared for his sons' futures. "My children have lost faith in the system. Every few months there is some controversy — sometimes a paper leak, other times glitches in the CBSE system. I came here for their future," he said.

Sajeev Kumar, 24, from Jaunpur, changed multiple trains and traveled nearly 10 hours to attend. Among the youngest participants was Abhimanyu, a Class III student wearing a cockroach-style face mask, who said, "I only know that there was a paper leak and responsibility should be taken, and the education minister must resign."

For 83-year-old retired driver Itwari Lal Mathur, the issue was deeply personal. "Young people are losing hope. Children are suffering because of these failures. Who will bring back the lives that are lost to such pressures?" he asked.

Incident at Protest

A brief moment of chaos occurred when some men allegedly raised slogans against CJP supporters. Police intervened and detained three individuals.
