Congress Workers File Second Police Complaint Over Derogatory Image of UPCC Chief
Congress workers in Lucknow have intensified their efforts to seek legal action against what they describe as politically motivated online harassment. On Saturday, a delegation once again approached the Hussainganj police station, demanding the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against alleged BJP-backed elements for circulating a derogatory image of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Rai on social media platforms.
Allegations of Political Patronage and Inaction
According to the Congress representatives, the objectionable post was shared two days ago by individuals they claim are "undesirable elements patronised by the BJP" from the Sarojini Nagar area. They assert that this content has deeply hurt the sentiments of party workers and supporters, constituting a deliberate attempt to tarnish the reputation of their leader through malicious online activity.
This marks the second formal complaint in this matter. Previously, on February 3, a delegation led by Lucknow District Congress Committee president Rudra Daman Singh, popularly known as 'Bablu', submitted an initial complaint at the same Hussainganj police station, explicitly demanding legal action against the perpetrators.
Accusations of Police Inaction Under Political Pressure
The Congress party has leveled serious allegations against the police administration, claiming that the failure to register an FIR following their first complaint is a direct result of "political pressure" from the ruling establishment. This accusation underscores a growing tension between the opposition party and law enforcement agencies in the state.
On Friday, a determined group of Congress workers, led once again by Rudra Daman Singh and joined by City Congress President Amit Srivastava Tyagi and Dr. Shahzad Alam, returned to the Hussainganj police station. Their objective was clear: to demand immediate and impartial action from the authorities.
Demands for Upholding Constitutional Principles
During their visit, the delegation emphatically urged the police to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, insisting that legal procedures must be followed without bias or external influence. "This is unfortunate that in the present regime even FIRs are being registered only under political pressure, not as per law," they stated, highlighting their perception of systemic bias in the administration of justice.
Rudra Daman Singh issued a stern warning, indicating that if the police fail to register an FIR promptly, the Congress party will have no choice but to escalate the matter by approaching the judiciary. This potential move to the courts signals the party's readiness to pursue all available legal avenues to address what they view as a serious violation of dignity and an attack on democratic norms.
The incident has sparked discussions about:
- The increasing use of social media for political targeting and character assassination
- The challenges in regulating online content that crosses into defamatory territory
- The role of law enforcement in handling politically sensitive complaints
- The broader implications for political discourse and inter-party relations in Uttar Pradesh
As the situation develops, all eyes are on the Hussainganj police station to see whether they will act on the Congress party's renewed complaint or if the matter will indeed proceed to the judicial system for resolution.
