Maharashtra Chief Minister Addresses Marathi Community in Kolkata, Links Bengal's Security to National Safety
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis delivered a significant address to the Marathi-speaking community in Kolkata on Friday, asserting that "only a safe Bengal can ensure a safe India." Speaking at Maharashtra Niwas near Kalighat, Fadnavis engaged with approximately 250 Marathi families residing in the city during an hour-long interaction conducted entirely in fluent Marathi.
Historical Context and Community Engagement
Fadnavis, affectionately known as 'Devabhau' among supporters, became the first sitting chief minister in several decades to address the Marathi community in Kolkata. Yogini Bapat of Maharashtra Mandal noted the historical significance, recalling that only two previous chief ministers—Yashwantrao Chavan and Vasantrao Naik—had engaged with the community in this manner.
"Despite a stretched campaign schedule in Kolkata, which included meetings with industrialists, a roadshow in Kasba, and a public gathering in Entally, he insisted on interacting with the Marathi-speaking community," revealed a Bengal BJP leader, highlighting the priority given to this engagement.
Economic Critique and Governance Comparison
During his address, Fadnavis launched a pointed critique of Bengal's economic trajectory, noting that the state has lost its historical position as India's financial capital. He presented stark statistics to support his argument.
- Nearly 1,400 listed companies have relocated from Kolkata
- 6,895 industries have exited the state entirely
"When companies leave, it reflects issues in governance and policy," Fadnavis stated, contrasting this with Maharashtra's business-friendly environment. He claimed many of these businesses moved to Maharashtra due to its "ease of doing business" and favorable ecosystem, while others relocated to Delhi, Gujarat, and other states.
Cultural Integration and Political Messaging
Fadnavis praised the cultural integration demonstrated by Maharashtrians in Kolkata, noting that "people from Maharashtra staying in Kolkata have embraced Bengal and its culture." He attributed this to the Marathi community's open mindset, stating they never had "sankoochit vichar" (narrow thinking).
However, the chief minister also raised concerns about demographic changes in certain Bengal districts. "There are districts where Hindus have become minorities in Bengal," he said, reinforcing his central message that national security depends on Bengal's stability.
Vision for Maharashtra and National Governance
Promoting his "magnetic Maharashtra" vision, Fadnavis highlighted the complementary contributions of both Bengal and Maharashtra to national development. He praised the governance model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi while urging the Marathi community in Kolkata to vote "in the interest of the nation."
The event marked a significant political outreach during Fadnavis's Kolkata visit, blending cultural appreciation with economic criticism and national security concerns in a carefully crafted message to both the Marathi diaspora and broader Bengal electorate.
