INDIA bloc reaches consensus on five points in first formal meeting since LS polls
INDIA bloc consensus on five points in first formal meet

The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, held its first formal meeting since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Monday at Delhi's Constitution Club, reaching a consensus on five key points. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced that 25 parties participated in the meeting, sharing their views and agreeing on a unified course of action.

Consensus Points

Kharge outlined the five points agreed upon during the meeting. First, the alliance will send a letter to the Chief Justice of India regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, vote loot, and election theft. The letter is to be delivered soon. Second, the opposition unanimously demanded the immediate resignation of the Education Minister, accusing him of betraying lakhs of youth who appeared for the NEET and CBSE examinations. Third, the Union government was urged to call an all-party meeting to address the precarious economic situation, unemployment, price rise, farmers' issues, and other people-centric concerns. Fourth, all parties agreed to meet every two months to maintain coordination. Fifth, during the monsoon session of Parliament, daily morning meetings will be held in the office of the Leader of the Opposition to ensure continued coordination.

Political Context

The meeting took place against the backdrop of recent assembly elections in four states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. While non-BJP parties won in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the results were seen as a setback for the opposition, with the BJP winning West Bengal and Assam and retaining power in Puducherry alongside its ally, the All India NR Congress. The meeting was reportedly convened at the request of Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress (TMC), which lost power in West Bengal after 15 years and is now facing internal dissent.

During the meeting, the TMC suffered another blow as veteran Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Shekhar Ray resigned from both the party and the Upper House. This resignation follows a recent revolt within the TMC legislature party in West Bengal, where 58 MLAs defied the leadership to back Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of Leader of the Opposition, rejecting the official nominee. The TMC has had an on-and-off relationship with the INDIA bloc and contested both the Lok Sabha and assembly elections in West Bengal independently.

Agenda and Discussions

Kharge welcomed the leaders and outlined the agenda, which included the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, alleged misuse of investigative agencies by the BJP-led Centre, perceived discrimination against non-BJP state governments, inflation, privatisation, unemployment, paper leaks, and what the opposition described as the Centre's weak foreign policy. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) boycotted the meeting, citing the Congress' betrayal after the Tamil Nadu elections, where the DMK lost power and the Congress aligned with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhgam (TVK) to form the government.

The INDIA bloc's consensus marks a significant step in opposition unity, aiming to challenge the BJP-led government on multiple fronts.
