Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has warned that his party will stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi if the central government does not restore statehood to the region. Speaking at a press conference, Choudhary alleged that the delay in restoring statehood has adversely impacted development and employment prospects in Jammu and Kashmir.
Impact of Delayed Statehood
Choudhary emphasized that the lack of statehood has hindered the region's progress, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. He noted that several development projects have been stalled due to bureaucratic hurdles arising from the union territory status. The deputy CM also pointed out that unemployment rates have surged, with young people facing limited opportunities in both government and private sectors.
Protest Plans
The deputy CM stated that if the government fails to act, his party will mobilize supporters for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar, a historic site in New Delhi often used for demonstrations. He called on other political parties in the region to join the movement, stressing that statehood is essential for preserving the region's identity and democratic rights.
Choudhary's remarks come amid growing demands from various political groups in Jammu and Kashmir for the restoration of statehood, which was revoked in August 2019 when the region was reorganized into two union territories. The central government has maintained that statehood will be restored at an appropriate time, but no concrete timeline has been provided.
Political Reactions
Opposition parties have supported the call for statehood, with leaders accusing the central government of delaying the process for political reasons. Meanwhile, ruling party representatives have defended the government's stance, citing security concerns and the need for administrative reforms. The protest threat adds to the ongoing political tension in the region, which has seen sporadic clashes between security forces and local activists.
Choudhary concluded by urging the central government to prioritize the restoration of statehood to ensure the region's stability and development. He reiterated that the protest would be peaceful but warned of escalating measures if demands are not met.
