Chennai Journalist Moves Madras High Court for CBI Probe Against BJP Over NaMo App Donations
A journalist based in Chennai has approached the Madras High Court with a significant petition, seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its former national president, J P Nadda. The case centers on allegations concerning the 'micro-donation online scandal' associated with the NaMo App.
Petition Demands Transparency in Fund Collection
The petitioner, identified as B R Aravindakshan, has urged the court to issue directives compelling the BJP and Nadda to disclose the complete financial records of all funds amassed through the NaMo App to date. This request aims to shed light on the handling of contributions that were solicited from the public.
According to the detailed petition, donors were not provided with clear and transparent information regarding whether their monetary contributions, intended for prominent government initiatives such as Swachh Bharat, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, or Kisan Seva, actually reached the official government accounts designated for these schemes. Instead, these funds were allegedly treated exclusively as party funds, raising serious legal and ethical concerns.
Allegations of Misrepresentation and Fraud
The petition argues that this practice potentially constitutes cheating and criminal breach of trust, as contributors were led to believe their donations would support government welfare programs. Aravindakshan highlighted that on December 25, 2021, the then BJP president, J P Nadda, publicly announced a special micro-donation campaign via the NaMo App.
This campaign was scheduled to run from December 25, 2021, to February 11, 2022, with Nadda appealing to the public to make micro-donations that would empower the party, which he stated always puts India first. The petitioner contends that this appeal created an unmistakable impression among citizens, including himself, that their contributions were benefiting both the BJP and Union government schemes.
