Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of his Economic Advisory Council (EAC) today, with further reforms to enhance ease of living and working on the agenda. The discussions centered on measures to boost India's economic growth amid global challenges.
Key Discussions and Assessments
According to sources, the Prime Minister and the EAC deliberated on various ideas and strategies to further strengthen India's economic trajectory in times of global uncertainty. Reforms aimed at improving ease of living and ease of doing business were also examined in detail.
Members of the council provided their assessment of the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on India and the global economy. This analysis comes as India continues to navigate geopolitical tensions while maintaining robust economic performance.
India's Strong GDP Growth
The meeting took place just a day after India's growth projections defied expectations, with a 7.7 per cent GDP growth recorded for the fiscal year 2025-26. The January to March quarter saw growth expand to 7.8 per cent, driven by strong domestic demand, increased government spending, and signs of revival in the rural economy. Notably, tractor sales surged by 23 per cent compared to the previous fiscal year.
These growth estimates surpassed forecasts despite global headwinds stemming from the West Asia crisis. Commenting on the data released by the National Statistical Office, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the inherent strength of the Indian economy. He stated, "GDP growth rate of 7.7 per cent in FY 2025-26 and 7.8 per cent in Q4 of FY 2025-26 reflect the inherent strength of our economy, the success of reforms, and the hard work of 140 crore Indians. We shall leave no stone unturned to further ‘Ease of Living,’ ‘Ease of Doing Business,’ and increase opportunities for our youth."
Continued Focus on Reforms
The government remains committed to implementing structural reforms that simplify processes for citizens and businesses alike. The discussions in the EAC meeting underscore the administration's priority on sustaining economic momentum and improving the quality of life for all Indians.
