On the 33rd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday vowed to fulfill his father's vision of a strong and self-reliant India. Paying tributes to Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul said that his father's ideals and dreams continue to inspire him.
Rahul Gandhi's Tribute
Rahul Gandhi visited the 'Vir Bhumi' memorial in New Delhi, where Rajiv Gandhi was cremated in 1991 after he was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Flanked by Congress leaders, including his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul offered floral tributes and spent some time in silence.
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi wrote, "Father, your vision of a strong, prosperous and self-reliant India remains my guiding light. On your death anniversary, I reiterate my commitment to fulfill your dreams for the nation." He added that Rajiv Gandhi's contributions to India's technological advancement and youth empowerment are unforgettable.
Rajiv Gandhi's Legacy
Rajiv Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989, is credited with introducing computerization and telecommunication reforms in India, which laid the foundation for the country's IT revolution. He also lowered the voting age from 21 to 18, empowering the youth. His tenure saw the signing of the Assam Accord and the Punjab Accord, aimed at bringing peace to the troubled regions.
Congress party leaders and workers across the country observed the day by organizing prayer meetings and blood donation camps. The party's official handle on X posted, "Remembering our beloved leader Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary. His vision for a modern India and his sacrifice for the nation will always be remembered."
Political Reactions
Several political figures, including former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, paid their respects. Sonia Gandhi, who was not present at the event due to health reasons, issued a statement saying, "Rajiv's life was dedicated to the service of the nation. His ideals continue to guide us." Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, stating, "On his death anniversary, I pay homage to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi. We are committed to fulfilling his vision of a strong and developed India."
The anniversary also saw criticism from some quarters, with the BJP accusing the Congress of neglecting Rajiv Gandhi's legacy. However, Rahul Gandhi's pledge to uphold his father's vision has reinforced the Congress party's narrative of continuity and commitment to national progress.
