Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Declares Kerala Voters Poised to Back NDA in Upcoming Assembly Elections
In a significant political development, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju asserted on Monday that the people of Kerala are prepared to extend their support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the forthcoming state assembly polls. Rijiju made this declaration after inaugurating the NDA's newly established zonal office in Thrikkakara, Kochi.
NDA Aims to Form Government and Transform Kerala's Political Dynamics
Rijiju emphasized that the NDA is contesting the elections this time with the explicit objective of forming the government and fundamentally altering Kerala's political landscape. He argued that Kerala has consistently lacked the appropriate governance required to propel the state to the next level of prosperity and development.
"This inauguration marks a promising beginning for the BJP and its allies, as we present a viable alternative to the longstanding LDF and UDF fronts," Rijiju stated. "The citizens of Kerala have endured the alternating rule of these two fronts for an extended period, and they have had enough."
The minister further alleged that numerous central government initiatives have failed to reach Kerala effectively due to the absence of a conducive and cooperative state government. He implied that an NDA-led administration would ensure better implementation of national schemes and policies.
Syro-Malabar Church Advocates for Micro-Minority Status During Meeting with NDA Leaders
Later in the day, Rijiju, accompanied by NDA leaders, held a meeting with Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Mar Raphael Thattil. During this discussion, the Church formally presented a demand for the Christian community to be granted micro-minority status.
Following the meeting, Rijiju described the interaction as a courtesy call but highlighted its constructive nature. "In Kerala, I believe we are successfully building confidence among minority communities, particularly those with smaller populations. We are committed to taking good care of them and ensuring equitable treatment for everyone," he told reporters.
Constitutional Protection for All Minorities and Specific Demands Addressed
Rijiju elaborated on the government's stance towards minorities, listing Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, and Parsis as the recognized minority communities in India, with Muslims being the largest and Parsis the smallest. "Our intention is to provide protection to all minority communities in accordance with the Constitution. If any deviations occur in any state, we will take corrective measures," he assured.
He specifically addressed the meeting with Archbishop Thattil, stating, "I assured the archbishop that the Modi government is dedicated to taking everybody along on the path of progress."
BJP State President Rajeev Chandrasekhar provided further details on the discussions. He revealed that two primary topics were addressed:
- The prelate expressed a strong desire for the Christian community to be awarded micro-minority status. The rationale behind this request is the perception that minority resources and reservations are disproportionately allocated to a particular religion.
- A discussion ensued regarding the consideration of this status, with Minister Rijiju indicating it would be examined.
Chandrasekhar added that a delegation would subsequently travel to Delhi to deliberate on the matter more thoroughly. Additionally, the Church raised a demand to invite Pope Leo XIV, to which Rijiju provided a positive assurance.
NDA's Collaborative Approach and Future Considerations
When questioned specifically about the micro-minority status demand, Rijiju clarified that it originated as a request from the state unit, and the BJP would duly look into it. The meeting also included the participation of key NDA figures, such as Sabu M Jacob, the chief-coordinator of the new NDA ally Twenty20, and BJP leader Shone George, underscoring the alliance's collaborative approach in Kerala.
