A Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA has made serious allegations against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), claiming he was offered Rs 30 crore to switch parties and subsequently received death threats. The MLA, who spoke to reporters on Monday, asserted that his accusations are not baseless and that he possesses concrete evidence to substantiate his claims.
Alleged bribe and intimidation
According to the TVK legislator, the offer was made by intermediaries representing the DMK ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. He stated that he was approached multiple times and promised a substantial sum of Rs 30 crore in exchange for joining the ruling party. When he refused, the MLA says he began receiving death threats via phone calls and text messages.
The MLA declined to name the intermediaries or DMK leaders involved, citing security concerns, but insisted that he has recorded conversations and other documentary proof. “I am not making empty accusations. I have solid proof to back my claims. The threats have become more frequent in the past week,” he said.
Political context and reactions
The allegations come amid heightened political tension in Tamil Nadu, with the TVK emerging as a significant opposition force. The DMK has dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated. A DMK spokesperson said, “These are false allegations meant to gain sympathy. We challenge the MLA to produce his proof publicly.”
TVK leadership has rallied behind the MLA, demanding a police investigation and protection for their member. Party workers staged a protest outside the state secretariat, accusing the DMK of using money and muscle power to weaken the opposition.
Security concerns and legal options
The MLA has sought security from the state government, citing credible threats to his life. He also hinted at filing a formal complaint with the Election Commission and the police. “I will not be silenced. The people of Tamil Nadu deserve to know the truth,” he said.
Political analysts note that such allegations, if proven, could damage the DMK’s image ahead of the elections. The TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has been gaining ground, and this incident may further polarize the electorate.
