Details of the Accident
The collision took place around 7:30 AM when a private passenger bus, traveling from Lucknow to Agra, rammed into a stationary tanker on the expressway. The tanker, which was carrying petroleum products, had reportedly stopped due to a mechanical issue. The bus driver lost control and crashed into the rear of the tanker, leading to the devastating impact.
Casualties and Injuries
According to local police officials, two passengers died on the spot due to severe injuries. The deceased have been identified as Rajesh Kumar (45) and Sunita Devi (38), both residents of Lucknow. Fifteen to twenty other passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to fractures. The injured were rushed to the District Hospital in Kannauj and nearby private facilities for treatment. Medical teams have been deployed to provide emergency care.
Rescue and Investigation
Immediately after the accident, local authorities and police reached the spot. Rescue operations were launched, and the injured were extricated from the mangled bus using cutting equipment. The traffic on the expressway was temporarily diverted to facilitate rescue work. Senior police officials have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary reports suggest that overspeeding and driver fatigue might have contributed to the accident. The bus driver has been detained for questioning.
Expressway Safety Concerns
The Agra-Lucknow Expressway, a key highway in Uttar Pradesh, has witnessed several accidents in the past. This incident has once again raised questions about safety measures on expressways, including the need for proper signage, lighting, and enforcement of speed limits. Local residents have demanded stricter regulations and better maintenance of the highway to prevent such tragedies.
Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible. Meanwhile, the families of the deceased have been informed, and compensation is being arranged under government schemes.
