Two Students Drown in Check Dam Silt Near Puducherry

PUDUCHERRY: In a tragic incident, two 18-year-old students lost their lives after becoming trapped in the deep silt of a check dam near Villianur in Puducherry on Friday. The deceased have been identified as K Vignesh of Thiruvandarkoil near Puducherry and G Kabilesh from the Kalitheerthalkuppam area. Both boys had recently completed their Class XII examinations and were awaiting college admissions.

Incident Details

According to police reports, the duo, along with three other friends, visited the check dam built across the Kuduvaiyar river at Melshathamangalam near Villianur to take a bath. While swimming, Vignesh unexpectedly stepped into a deep patch of thick silt and mud at the bottom of the check dam and began struggling. Seeing his friend in distress, Kabilesh rushed to his rescue. However, Kabilesh also became entangled in the heavy silt, and both boys quickly sank beneath the water.

Rescue Efforts

Their friends immediately raised an alarm, and local residents rushed to the spot. Fire and rescue services were called, and efforts were made to retrieve the bodies. After several hours, the bodies of both students were recovered from the silt. They were later taken to a government hospital for postmortem examination.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the local community, with family and friends mourning the loss of the young lives.
