Heavy Rainfall Causes Widespread Disruption in Uttarakhand
Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has triggered rockfall and debris accumulation, resulting in the closure of 32 roads across the state, as reported by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) on Tuesday.
Details of Road Closures
According to the SEOC, the blocked roads are primarily in hilly districts where landslides and falling rocks have made passage dangerous. The affected routes include both state highways and rural roads, cutting off access to several villages and towns.
Efforts to clear the debris and reopen the roads are underway, with teams from the Border Roads Organisation and state disaster response units deployed. However, officials caution that continued rainfall may slow progress.
Impact on Local Communities
The road closures have disrupted daily life, stranding vehicles and affecting the supply of essential goods. Schools in some areas have been closed as a precaution, and residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and have deployed machinery to clear the roads as soon as possible," said a SEOC official. "People are urged to stay safe and follow advisories."
Weather Forecast and Safety Measures
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall in the region over the next 24 hours, increasing the risk of further landslides. Authorities have issued warnings for tourists and locals in vulnerable areas.
The state government has set up relief camps in worst-affected areas and is coordinating with district administrations to ensure timely assistance.
