FanCode and Genius Sports Compete for Indian Super League Commercial Rights

In a significant development for Indian football, Dream11-owned FanCode and Genius Sports have emerged as the two bidders for the commercial rights of the Indian Super League (ISL) and Federation Cup. The tender, floated earlier this month, is based on a 15+5 year model, aiming to secure long-term partnerships for the sport's growth.

Bid Details and Financial Offers

Genius Sports, the official data feed provider for leagues like the English Premier League, has made a substantial bid of Rs 2129 crore over 20 years. However, its involvement in real-time betting odds technology could pose regulatory challenges in India, where betting is illegal. In contrast, FanCode has adopted a more pragmatic approach with an annual bid of Rs 36 crore, featuring 5 percent increments, totaling approximately Rs 1190 crore over the same period—nearly half of Genius Sports' offer.

Evaluation and Next Steps

After presenting the tender document to the 14 ISL clubs and evaluating the bids on technical and financial aspects, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and club representatives will reconvene in the coming days to deliberate on the specifics. One club official indicated that a decision might take a few days, highlighting the complexity of the process.

Women's League Bids and Other Developments

Capri Sports, a subsidiary of Capri Global, stands as the only bidder for the commercial rights of the Indian Women's League (IWL) and IWL 2, with an offer of Rs 150 crore over 20 years. Notably, GMR Sports, which attended the pre-bid meeting and is involved in ventures like IPL's Delhi Capitals, did not submit a bid after requesting more time, a request denied by the AIFF.

Tender Scope and Eligibility

The AIFF had extended the bid deadline from March 20 to March 26 to accommodate interested parties. The tender encompasses a broad range of commercial aspects beyond media rights, including sponsorship, advertising, digital and data initiatives, merchandising, and event-linked opportunities. This comprehensive approach aims to create a consolidated commercial ecosystem for Indian club football. Initially, the AIFF set strict eligibility criteria, requiring companies to purchase the Request for Proposal (RFP) for Rs 2.5 lakh to submit bids.
