French Rugby Fans Get Premiership via Twitch Streamer's Bold Move

Rugby enthusiasts in France are poised to experience the Premiership in a groundbreaking new format. In a significant shift from traditional television broadcasting, the league will now be accessible through a Twitch streamer. Florian Marliere, the operator of the Janusport channel, has successfully acquired the rights to broadcast the remainder of the Premiership Rugby season in France.

From TV Network to Twitch: A Streaming Revolution

This innovative development follows a period of uncertainty for French fans. The 2024–25 season was previously televised on beIN Sports, but that arrangement lasted only one year. After the contract concluded, no mainstream broadcaster stepped forward to secure the rights, leaving a void for followers of the competition. Marliere intervened by purchasing the rights for what he described as a "five-figure sum," as reported by the sports publication L’Equipe.

His coverage is set to commence on Friday with the highly anticipated match between Bath and Saracens. Moving forward, Marliere plans to live-stream matches directly on Twitch, where he will personally provide commentary. This approach, commonly associated with gaming content, represents a novel application in the realm of rugby broadcasting.

Florian Marliere's Motivation: Passion Over Profit

In an interview with L’Equipe, Florian Marliere clarified that his initiative is not driven by financial gain. "It all stems from frustration, that a rugby fan like myself, can no longer watch this exciting competition," he explained. He further emphasized, "Honestly, the idea isn't to make money with this project; we'll probably even lose some. But I hope that the increased visibility will lead to side projects that might be more profitable."

This candid admission underscores his primary objective: to reintroduce the league to the French audience. The market presents considerable challenges due to the dominance of local rugby, where fans predominantly support domestic teams, making it difficult for foreign leagues to establish a foothold.

Streaming's Growing Role in Sports Broadcasting

This is not the inaugural instance of streaming platforms venturing into sports. For example, Mark Goldbridge already broadcasts Bundesliga matches on his "That's Football" YouTube channel, which boasts over 1.5 million subscribers. In rugby, the Pro D2 league is available in the UK through FR-UK, a smaller digital platform.

Premiership Rugby itself has witnessed positive outcomes with online streaming. Earlier this season, matches from the Premiership Rugby Cup attracted substantial viewership, including audiences in the six-figure range for fixtures such as Leicester versus Northampton and Gloucester versus Bath.

Implications for the Future of Rugby Viewing

All attention is now focused on the success of Marliere's experimental venture. Should it resonate with fans, this model could pave the way for alternative viewing methods in markets where conventional television agreements face difficulties. Presently, it stands as a courageous endeavor motivated more by enthusiasm than by economic considerations.
