Assam sees 28% crime drop in two years, NCRB report shows

Assam recorded one of the steepest declines in crime cases in the country, according to the latest Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Wednesday.

Sharp Drop in Crime Numbers

The state registered 49,552 cases in 2024, down from 64,959 in 2023 and 68,937 in 2022. This marks a 28% fall in two years, positioning Assam among the states with the fastest reduction in reported crime.

Crime Rate Below National Average

With a projected population base of 361.6 lakh, Assam's crime rate stood at 137 per lakh population, well below the national average of 418. The report also notes that Assam's charge-sheeting rate improved to 67.1% in 2024, compared to below 50% in earlier years.

Conviction Rate Remains Low

However, the state's conviction rate was just 22.3%, far lower than the national average of 53.3%, highlighting a gap between investigation and prosecution.
