The state water resources department has given its approval for a major anti-erosion project aimed at protecting villages along the Ganga river in Bhojpur district. The initiative will primarily focus on the Shahpur block, where large-scale erosion has already displaced hundreds of families.
Project Details and Cost
According to the Bhojpur district magistrate's office, anti-erosion work will be carried out on the right bank of the Ganga near the Buxar-Koilwar embankment. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 52 crore. A junior engineer associated with the project confirmed that villages such as Gangapur, Bhusoula, Nandpur, and Jawaniya (Damodarpur), which have been severely affected by erosion, will benefit from the initiative.
Implementation and Benefits
The engineer stated that boulder pitching work has already commenced to strengthen and stabilise the riverbank. Officials have indicated that the project aims to protect nearly half-a-dozen vulnerable villages from recurring erosion and prevent further loss of land and property. The initiative is expected to provide both immediate relief and long-term benefits to the affected communities.
Previous Erosion Impact
In July 2025, devastating erosion in Jawaniya village alone swallowed more than 200 houses, around 300 bighas of farmland, two water tanks, three temples, and two school buildings. In response, the district administration provided Rs 1 lakh compensation to affected families and rehabilitation land at Belauti, approximately 30 km away. A senior district official remarked that the new project will not only offer immediate relief but will also prove highly beneficial for the public in the long run.
