Canacona's Dangerous Shortcut: Locals Demand Road Widening
Canacona's Dangerous Shortcut: Road Safety Crisis

Popular Shortcut Turns Perilous in Canacona

The service road connecting Karmal Ghat to Dumane-Agonda in Canacona has become both a blessing and a curse for daily commuters. While this route offers a significant shortcut saving approximately 8 kilometers to Agonda and providing quicker access to Cabo de Rama, its dangerous conditions have raised serious safety concerns among locals and tourists alike.

Narrow Roads and Visibility Issues Create Hazards

Regular users of this route face constant risks due to the road's narrow width and sharp curves. Pramod Phal Desai, a local resident from Agonda, confirmed that despite the distance advantage, the journey remains hazardous. "The road being narrow makes riding or driving risky," Desai stated, highlighting the daily dangers faced by motorists.

The situation is further complicated by overgrown trees that obstruct visibility along the curvy stretch. As an immediate solution, motorists have demanded that these trees be trimmed and proper signage installed to prevent accidents.

Local Authorities Acknowledge the Problem

Nilesh Pagi, the Agonda sarpanch, revealed that although the problematic road section falls under Shrishal panchayat's jurisdiction, he had written to concerned authorities four months ago expressing his concerns. "The road needs to be widened and illuminated," Pagi emphasized, pointing to the comprehensive improvements required.

Echoing this sentiment, Sejal Gaonkar, sarpanch of Shristhal, agreed that road widening is necessary for public safety. The consensus among local leaders underscores the urgency of addressing this infrastructure issue.

Police Intervention and Future Actions

Gautam Salunke, police inspector of the traffic cell, recognized the route's importance as a vital connection to Agonda. He committed to taking official action, stating, "I will write to the PWD pointing out faults along this route, and that it should be broadened on a priority basis." This police support adds significant weight to the community's demands for immediate road improvements.

The collective voice of locals, tourists, and officials now puts pressure on authorities to transform this dangerous shortcut into a safe, reliable route for all travelers.
