In a significant move to reclaim public spaces and ensure orderly city life, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation launched a stringent citywide crackdown on Saturday. The enforcement action specifically targeted illegal and unregistered street vendors operating across the city.
Major Drive Against Unauthorised Vending
The primary objective of the extensive operation was to guarantee smooth movement for the public, maintain organised market areas, and enforce compliance with municipal bylaws. Officials from the civic body expressed that the proliferation of unauthorised vending units has been a persistent issue, leading to severe congestion on roads and footpaths.
During the drive, a total of 126 challans were issued to vendors found operating without valid permission or in violation of established civic norms. The action was not limited to fines; enforcement teams physically removed temporary encroachments that had taken over footpaths, roadsides, and key market areas.
Restoring Public Spaces and Addressing Safety
The removal of these illegal structures and stalls successfully restored vital public spaces for pedestrians and daily commuters. Authorities emphasised that beyond causing traffic snarls, unauthorised vending poses significant safety and hygiene concerns for the general public. These concerns range from fire hazards due to makeshift electrical connections to littering and unregulated food handling.
The entire drive was carried out under the direct supervision of the superintendent of the enforcement wing. Vendors operating without the necessary authorisation from the municipal corporation were identified and proceeded against as per the rules.
