Chandigarh's Rs 97-Crore Road Upgrade: 400+ KM to Be Resurfaced
Chandigarh's Rs 97-Crore Road Upgrade Plan Approved

Chandigarh's Massive Road Transformation Initiative

After enduring two years of stalled development projects and deteriorating street conditions, residents of Chandigarh are set to witness the city's most ambitious road upgrade initiative. The Municipal Corporation has finalized plans for a comprehensive Rs 97-crore recarpeting project that will touch nearly every part of the city, marking a significant turnaround in urban infrastructure development.

Project Details and Implementation Timeline

The substantial proposal, listed as a supplementary agenda, received discussion and approval during Friday's general house meeting. The extensive plan has been strategically divided into 13 distinct agenda items, ensuring systematic implementation across southern sectors, villages, colonies, and the Manimajra area.

According to official sources, this second-phase road restoration drive will resurface over 400 kilometers of roads, specifically targeting V-4, V-5, and V-6 road stretches that serve residential zones, commercial areas, and parking facilities. The project implementation is scheduled for the next financial year (2026-27), with tender processes expected to be completed by March 2026.

"We anticipate substantial funds under Revised Estimates by January, and a major share will be directed toward these critical infrastructure works," revealed sources familiar with the project planning.

Technical Approach and Current Progress

The road upgrade project incorporates advanced technical processes, including scarifying worn-out stretches before recarpeting to restore proper thickness and durability. This approach presents particular challenges in densely populated residential areas but is essential for long-term road quality.

Once officially approved, the Municipal Corporation will issue subdivision-wise tenders to accelerate execution and ensure timely completion. This methodical approach represents a decisive response to widespread criticism the civic body has faced regarding deteriorating road conditions throughout Chandigarh.

Simultaneously, recarpeting works worth approximately Rs 40 crore allocated in October have already commenced on the ground. These ongoing projects are expected to conclude next year within established timelines, with completion periods ranging from three to ten months depending on road length and scarifying requirements.

Strategic Planning and Seasonal Considerations

The Municipal Corporation has implemented strategic scheduling to optimize project outcomes. No recarpeting activities will occur during peak winter months from December to February, ensuring that current works progress smoothly and conclude as planned next year.

This comprehensive road makeover, if cleared as expected, will represent Chandigarh's most extensive infrastructure upgrade in over a decade. The project specifically targets roads categorized as 'poor condition' across multiple sectors, including:

  • V-6 roads in Sectors 11, 31-C & D, and 33-C & D
  • V-5 roads in Sectors 33, 37, 50-A & B, and 56
  • V-4 roads in Sectors 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, and 48
  • Paid parking facilities in Sectors 32, 33, and 46

The initiative signals a renewed commitment to urban development and improved quality of life for Chandigarh residents, addressing long-standing concerns about road infrastructure while setting new standards for municipal project execution.
