LB Road Chennai Crisis: Illegal Parking, Wrong-Side Driving Choke 5-km Stretch
Chennai's LB Road Choked by Illegal Parking, Accidents Rise

Chennai's Vital LB Road Becomes Commuter Nightmare

The crucial LB Road in Chennai, which serves as a vital connector between Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur, has transformed into a daily struggle for thousands of commuters. This essential 5-kilometer stretch is currently plagued by multiple issues including rampant illegal parking, reckless wrong-side driving, and insufficient police monitoring during peak hours.

Narrow Roads and Dangerous Conditions

Measuring merely 15 feet wide at several sections, the road becomes virtually impassable during morning and evening rush hours. The situation has deteriorated to such an extent that even two-wheelers find it impossible to navigate through the congestion. Elderly residents face additional challenges due to the absence of adequate zebra crossings, making road crossing a hazardous undertaking.

Devanathan, a local resident from Thiruvanmiyur, shared a concerning account: "Multiple accidents and vehicle collisions have occurred here over the years. Recently, three people from our apartment suffered injuries while crossing."

Problem Areas and Police Response

According to D Balaji, vice-president of Kasturba Nagar Residents Welfare Association, the situation reaches its worst at specific locations. "The most problematic section is the Shastri Nagar signal near the petrol bunk, where vehicles from Thiruvanmiyur, Shastri Nagar, and Indira Nagar converge. On the opposite side, near the BSNL office, traffic jams are routine during weekdays," he explained.

The traffic police have acknowledged the issues and claim to be taking action. Adyar traffic police sub-inspector Prabhakar stated that 15-20 vehicles are seized daily for illegal parking offenses. Additionally, authorities have installed 17 signboards cautioning against overspeeding, with plans to erect more in the near future.

From the Thiruvanmiyur side, inspector Zakir Hussain reported that 30-40 obstruction cases are registered every day, with most violations originating from the LB Road area. "We are deploying personnel at the Indira Nagar junction and near Thiruvanmiyur to reduce congestion," he added.

Despite these measures, the fundamental problems persist. The road's pavements, though ample in space, remain largely occupied by parked two-wheelers, while cars parked along the road further reduce the already limited width, particularly near the Adyar depot area.
