Delhi CM Orders Magisterial Inquiry into Vivek Vihar Fire

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Vivek Vihar fire incident, official sources confirmed on Tuesday. The blaze, which erupted on Sunday at a four-storey building in East Delhi's Vivek Vihar, claimed nine lives, including that of a toddler.

Rescue Operation Shortcomings

According to sources, the initial report has highlighted multiple deficiencies in the rescue operations carried out during the fire. "The first fire tender that reached the spot had only a half-filled water tank, while the second vehicle arrived after a considerable delay," sources stated. Additional issues in the response mechanism included the unavailability of rescue nets, prompting authorities to ask residents to arrange mattresses from nearby houses as makeshift safety measures.

Comprehensive Investigation Ordered

The Chief Minister has directed the concerned District Magistrate (DM) to submit a comprehensive report detailing the response of all relevant agencies, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Urban Development Department, and the fire services. "The report will also incorporate inputs from affected families and local residents to establish a clearer sequence of events during the rescue operation," officials added.

Furthermore, the inquiry will extend to the construction of the building where the fire originated. "The DM has been instructed to investigate the contractor involved and verify whether any violations of building norms or safety regulations occurred," sources noted.

High-Level Meeting Scheduled

The Chief Minister is slated to hold a high-level meeting on Wednesday with fire and other concerned departments to address the alleged shortfalls in the rescue operation. On Tuesday, Gupta met with the families of the Vivek Vihar fire tragedy victims, reiterating her government's commitment to providing every possible assistance to those affected.

The incident has raised serious questions about fire safety preparedness and emergency response in the capital, with the magisterial inquiry expected to shed light on systemic failures and recommend preventive measures.
