JCP Rupesh Kumar Urges Faster Street Light Installation on Basanti Highway
JCP Demands Faster Street Lights on Basanti Highway

In a significant move to enhance public safety, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar has called for urgent action to install street lights along the poorly illuminated Basanti Highway. This initiative aims to dramatically improve visibility on this crucial stretch, thereby reducing both criminal activities and traffic accidents.

Road Safety Meeting Highlights Urgent Need

The pressing demand was formally made during the district road safety committee meeting held on Friday. JCP Rupesh Kumar specifically urged the Public Works Department (electrical) to accelerate the installation process, emphasizing the critical importance of proper illumination for public safety.

Police officials have repeatedly highlighted the connection between poor lighting and increased criminal incidents on this highway. The absence of adequate street lights has created dangerous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly during night hours.

Current Status and Financial Hurdles

According to PWD officials, the proposed widening of Basanti Highway to 12 meters already includes comprehensive street lighting plans within its detailed project report. This document has been submitted for financial approval through proper channels.

However, recognizing the immediate safety concerns, Kumar requested a separate, focused report specifically addressing the street lighting aspect of Basanti Highway. This targeted approach could potentially fast-track the illumination project without waiting for the broader highway widening approval.

While PWD officials have committed to addressing the safety issues, concerns about cost estimates have emerged from the South 24 Parganas division. An official expressed reservations about the financial implications of both installing new street lights and relocating existing ones within the Bhangar traffic guard jurisdiction.

Expected Safety Outcomes

The implementation of proper street lighting along Basanti Highway is expected to deliver multiple safety benefits:

  • Reduced criminal activities through better visibility and surveillance
  • Decreased accident rates as drivers can see obstacles and pedestrians clearly
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety during nighttime hours
  • Improved traffic flow with properly illuminated road markings and signs

The community has long awaited safety improvements on this vital transportation corridor. The police department's proactive stance reflects growing concerns about public safety in poorly illuminated areas around Kolkata.

As the project moves through the approval process, residents and daily commuters remain hopeful that the street light installation will be prioritized given its direct impact on public safety and crime prevention.
