Ludhiana Activist Highlights Neglected State of War Hero's Memorial

In a heartfelt appeal to the authorities, Ludhiana-based social activist Kumar Gaurav, popularly known as Sacha Yadav from NGO Yuva, has brought attention to the deplorable condition surrounding the statue of martyr Major Bhupinder Singh and his tank near Rose Garden. The activist expressed deep concern over the lack of basic maintenance and cleanliness at the site dedicated to honoring a national hero.

Appeal for Restoration and Relocation

Gaurav has formally requested that the statue be relocated to its original position at Bharat Nagar Chowk to restore the dignity and glory of the martyr's memorial. He emphasized that the current state of neglect around the statue tells a story of institutional indifference toward honoring our war heroes.

"After seeing the condition of the area, I was sad that there was no arrangement for sweeping around the statue," Gaurav stated. He further pointed out that the dry garland hanging around the neck of the statue symbolized the overall misery and neglect facing the memorial site.

Authorities Under Scrutiny

The activist criticized the municipal authorities for remaining silent about shifting the statue back to its previous location, despite repeated demands from residents and fellow activists. Gaurav specifically called upon Mayor Inderjit Kaur to take immediate action in this matter, asserting that there is sufficient space available at Bharat Nagar Chowk for both the statue and the tank to be installed there properly.

He stressed that such a relocation would serve an important educational purpose, allowing the younger generation to learn about the heroic deeds of the martyr in a respectful and accessible environment.

Historical Context and Recent Developments

The statue was originally removed from Bharat Nagar Chowk to facilitate development works in the area. However, instead of reinstalling it at its original position after completion of work, the Municipal Corporation placed the statue near Rose Garden. This decision has been a point of contention among local residents and activists ever since.

The situation gained momentum after the completion of the elevated road at Ferozepur Road, when Bharat Nagar Chowk renovation began with assistance from a private firm. When the private company installed a cycle at the chowk, activists renewed their demands for the statue's return to its rightful place.

The matter has reached significant administrative levels, with Western Command Headquarters intervening and directing Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain to examine the issue. This military involvement has added weight to the activists' campaign, prompting them to plan another meeting to strategize their next steps in this ongoing battle for proper recognition of their local hero.
