Madurai Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan has issued a clarion call to the city's residents, stating that public participation is the most critical factor in transforming Madurai into a clean and green urban space. She made these remarks on Saturday while addressing a seminar organized as part of the 'MDU Rising' event.
Public Cooperation Vital for Swachh Survekshan Ranking
Speaking on the city's performance in the national Swachh Survekshan survey, Commissioner Vijayan acknowledged the existing challenges. She pointed out that while there are numerous garbage-vulnerable points across Madurai, the civic body's sanitary workers are operating at full capacity. The commissioner emphasized that the sustained success of cleanliness drives hinges on citizens' behavior. The public must actively avoid littering and support the corporation's efforts to see a tangible improvement in the city's ranking and overall hygiene.
Addressing Stray Dogs and Launching New Initiatives
During her address, Vijayan also tackled the persistent issue of stray dogs in Madurai. She firmly stated that human life is of paramount importance and encouraged residents to be responsible pet owners. She urged them to come forward and obtain official licences for their pets as a step towards managing the population and ensuring public safety.
The seminar, organized by the Agri and All Trade Chamber and You Export (YE), also witnessed the inauguration of a significant new initiative. The Olirum Madurai Foundation was launched with the primary goal of making Madurai cleaner. K Thirupathi Rajan, Chairman of YE, detailed the foundation's immediate actions and future plans.
Foundation's Plan: From Localities to Water Bodies
Rajan explained that, in collaboration with corporation sanitary workers, the foundation has already conducted cleaning activities in several localities within Zone 5. As a mark of support, the organizers distributed essential safety kits to the workers, which included:
- Reflector coats and caps
- Gumboots and gloves
- Masks
- A sari
Looking ahead, the foundation aims to expand its scope. "We will extend our cleaning activities to water bodies," Rajan announced. The Avaniyapuram kanmoi (lake) is slated for a cleanup drive next month. Furthermore, the foundation is planning to procure specialized equipment like a wood shredder and a suction machine to tackle roadside waste more effectively. Rajan also stressed the need for establishing additional recycling centres in different zones of the city to manage waste sustainably.
The event saw the presence of several dignitaries, including President of Agri and All Trade Chamber S Rethinavelu, divisional engineer of state highways Mohana Gandhi, assistant divisional engineer Anand, and Gurusamy Thiagarajan, founder of Star Friends Trust.
