Major Water Supply Disruption Hits Mumbai Next Week
Residents across significant portions of Mumbai need to brace themselves for a substantial water supply interruption lasting thirty hours early next week. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced essential pipeline cross-connection work that will impact numerous areas throughout the city.
Critical Infrastructure Work Details
The scheduled shutdown will commence at 10 am on Monday, December 1, and continue without interruption until 4 pm on Tuesday, December 2. This extensive operation involves connecting a 2,500 mm water main to the existing 3,000 mm main at Chheda Nagar Junction in Ghatkopar (East).
According to BMC officials, this crucial procedure is necessary to integrate the Amar Mahal Tunnel, specifically Shafts 1 and 2, with Mumbai's primary water distribution network. The civic body emphasizes that this integration work is vital for the city's long-term water infrastructure development.
Affected Areas and Expected Impact
The water supply disruption will impact eleven administrative wards spanning both the island city and eastern suburbs. During the thirty-hour period, residents in these zones will experience either significantly reduced water pressure or complete suspension of supply.
Island City Areas Affected:
- Byculla
- Mumbai Central
- Nagpada
- Dongri
- Masjid Bunder
- Worli
- Parel
- Sion
- Wadala
- Sewri
Eastern Suburbs Impacted:
- Kurla
- Chunabhatti
- Govandi
- Deonar
- Chembur
- Ghatkopar
- Vikhroli
- Bhandup
The affected administrative divisions include A, B, C, E, F-South, and F-North wards in South and Central Mumbai, along with L, M-East, M-West, S, and N wards in the eastern suburbs.
Preparation and Advisory
Municipal authorities are urging residents in the impacted zones to store sufficient water in advance to meet their essential needs during the shutdown period. The BMC has assured citizens that normal water supply will resume progressively after the completion of work at 4 pm on Tuesday.
This infrastructure upgrade represents part of Mumbai's ongoing efforts to strengthen its water distribution system and ensure reliable supply for the growing metropolitan population in the years ahead.
