Mumbai: Mayor Ritu Tawde dismissed rumours regarding an alleged ban on fish cutting at the Vakola fish market, assuring the Koli community that no such restrictions have been imposed by the municipal corporation. She urged traders to continue their business without any fear.
Mayor's Visit to Vakola Market
On Monday morning, Tawde visited the Vakola fish market and interacted with Koli women fish vendors. The visit came after reports on social media and certain media platforms claimed that the local civic administration had prohibited fish cutting activities at the market.
“There are no restrictions imposed by the municipal corporation on cutting fish at Vakola or any other fish market in Mumbai. The Koli sisters and brothers should continue their work without worry,” the mayor stated.
Misinformation and Support
Tawde described the claims as baseless misinformation and urged citizens not to believe unverified reports. She emphasized that the Koli community, as the original inhabitants of Mumbai, remains an integral part of the city’s identity. The mayor assured them of full support from the civic administration.
During her interaction, several Koli women informed the mayor that no official had obstructed or interfered with their work. Tawde further assured that in case of any future obstruction, they could directly contact her office for immediate resolution.
The mayor’s proactive visit and clear message have helped allay fears among the traders, ensuring the smooth functioning of the market.
