Major Disruption on Western Railway After Tragic Incident
A fatal trespassing incident on Mumbai's Western Railway network caused significant delays and frustration for thousands of commuters during the busy Friday morning rush hour. The disruption occurred near Mahim station when a 48-year-old man was struck by an oncoming train while crossing the tracks.
The incident took place around 10:30 am on the Up fast line, forcing railway authorities to halt services and reroute trains onto the slow track. This led to cascading delays across the network, with many services running significantly behind schedule throughout the morning.
Communication Breakdown Angers Stranded Passengers
Commuters expressed deep frustration over the lack of timely information and announcements regarding the disruption. Office-goer Sunita Mehta, who was traveling from Andheri to Dadar, shared her experience of being left in the dark about the situation.
"I don't know why they don't announce," lamented Mehta as her train remained stationary. "There was no announcement on platforms or inside the compartment about the reason for the delay."
The absence of clear communication exacerbated the inconvenience for passengers, many of whom were already dealing with extended travel times due to the track diversion and subsequent bunching of trains.
Victim Identified as Migrant Worker from Bihar
Police identified the deceased as Rampukar Yadav, 48, a native of Madhubani in Bihar who had come to Mumbai in search of employment. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 10:38 am when Yadav attempted to cross the railway tracks between Bandra and Mahim stations.
According to police reports, Yadav suffered severe injuries in the collision and was rushed to a public hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. Authorities confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene, and they are yet to record the motorman's statement to gain further clarity on the circumstances.
A cell phone recovered from the victim helped police contact his relatives and establish his identity. His family members are expected to claim the body after a post-mortem examination is conducted. The Bandra Government Railway Police have registered an accidental death case in connection with the incident.
Commuters Face Extended Travel Times
The disruption had a tangible impact on daily commuters, with what should have been a routine journey turning into an endurance test. The travel time from Andheri to Dadar stretched to an hour, significantly longer than the usual duration, testing the patience of regular passengers.
A commuter rights activist highlighted the broader implications of the incident, stating that "while the railway staff worked to restore normalcy, the incident highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures and better management of emergency situations."
