The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to the Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) and other authorities for allegedly disturbing the riverbed of the Sharavathi River in Karnataka. The notice came in response to a detailed petition filed by environmental activists Manjunath Hirechowti and Deepak C N of Lanchamukta Karnataka, who have raised serious concerns about the ecological impact of the activities.
Petition Alleges Environmental Damage
The activists have claimed that the ongoing works by KNNL are causing significant disturbance to the riverbed, leading to potential harm to the aquatic ecosystem and the surrounding environment. The petition highlights the violation of environmental norms and the need for immediate intervention to prevent further degradation.
NGT Seeks Response
The NGT has directed the concerned parties to submit their responses within a stipulated timeframe. The tribunal has also sought a detailed report on the current status of the riverbed and the measures being taken to mitigate the impact. The case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks, with environmental groups closely monitoring the developments.
This action by the NGT underscores the growing judicial scrutiny on infrastructure projects that threaten ecologically sensitive areas. The Sharavathi River, known for its biodiversity and significance in the Western Ghats, has been a focal point for conservationists who have long demanded stricter regulations on riverbed mining and construction activities.
