Historic Lake Gets Modern Makeover
The iconic Sonegaon Lake in Nagpur is experiencing a remarkable metamorphosis, evolving from a simple water body into one of the city's most organized and attractive public spaces. The ambitious beautification and rejuvenation initiative undertaken by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has completely transformed the historic lake's appearance and functionality.
What was previously a basic area with limited seating has now been converted into a fully landscaped recreational zone featuring multiple mini gardens, an open-air amphitheatre, themed installations, and significantly improved civic infrastructure. The renewed setup is already drawing families, morning walkers, and young crowds who appreciate both the aesthetic enhancement and environmental improvements.
Phased Development with Substantial Investment
The lake's transformation has been executed through carefully planned phases with substantial financial backing. In July 2017, the state government sanctioned ₹18.20 crore for the initial phase, which included fundamental works such as strengthening embankments and preparing the site for more extensive developmental interventions.
More recently in 2024, an additional ₹24.96 crore was allocated for the second phase, covering comprehensive upgrades including lake desilting, dedicated pathways, amphitheatre construction, fountain installation, and improved stormwater management systems. According to officials, the redesigned layout strategically integrates leisure facilities while simultaneously strengthening the lake's ecological stability.
From Historical Reservoir to Modern Recreational Hub
Built in the 18th century by the Bhonsles as a crucial water reservoir, Sonegaon Lake once formed an essential component of the city's traditional water-management network, originally drawing its supply from the Pora River. The current rejuvenation project honors this historical significance while introducing contemporary amenities that meet modern urban needs.
The enhanced lake garden now features a unique botanical theme complemented by a yoga court, food court, and designated selfie points, creating a versatile multi-use space suitable for wellness activities, recreation, and social gatherings. For long-term structural stability, a concrete retaining wall has been constructed along the south, west and parts of the north side of the lake, with stone cladding work already completed on significant stretches, particularly on the northern side, giving the lakefront a more polished and cohesive appearance.
Citizens Embrace the Transformation
The new facilities have generated enthusiastic responses from Nagpur residents. Young couples report preferring to spend their evenings at the lake due to the cleaner, safer, and more picturesque environment. The amphitheatre and carefully landscaped zones provide the area with a proper city-park atmosphere that many felt was missing earlier.
Milind Kamble, a senior citizen on his daily walk, expressed appreciation for the improved pathways and lighting. "For the first time in years, the lake feels properly maintained. The walking track is smooth, the greenery has increased substantially, and the overall environment feels fresh and inviting. This is exactly what our neighbourhood needed," he remarked.
The successful rejuvenation of Sonegaon Lake represents a significant achievement in urban development, demonstrating how historical water bodies can be revitalized to serve contemporary community needs while preserving their ecological and historical value.
