New Delhi: Three separate fire incidents were reported from different parts of the city on Saturday, damaging property and leaving several families distressed. No casualties were reported in any of the incidents.
Shakur Basti Jhuggi Fire
The first and most severe blaze gutted nearly 100 shanties in a JJ cluster at Shakur Basti in west Delhi. Police said a call regarding the fire at cement siding jhuggis was received at Punjabi Bagh police station around 11.10 pm. The fire spread rapidly through the closely packed shanties, posing challenges for firefighters. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) brought the blaze under control by 12.38 am.
Residents managed to escape in time, but many lost all their belongings. Eyewitnesses said the fire appeared to have started from a spark near one of the shanties before quickly engulfing the cluster. “Everyone just picked up their children and ran,” a resident said.
This was the fourth jhuggi fire reported in the past two months. Earlier this month, a couple and their daughter died in a fire in Budh Vihar. In March, a 17-year-old girl was killed when around 100 shanties were gutted in Rithala, followed by another blaze that affected 300 shanties in Uttam Nagar.
Shahdara Godown Fire
In a second incident, a fire broke out at a tent godown in Shahdara’s Jyoti Nagar on Saturday afternoon. DFS rushed 23 tenders and over 100 personnel. The presence of combustible materials led to the fire spreading rapidly. The blaze was doused after several hours.
Majlis Park Plastic Waste Fire
The third fire was reported from a jungle area in Majlis Park, where plastic waste caught fire. DFS received a call around 2.30 pm and extinguished the blaze by 7.40 pm.
