MUMBAI: Western Railway authorities on Thursday resumed an anti-encroachment demolition drive in Mumbai's Bandra area, a day after violent clashes broke out between police and protesters. The drive was carried out in Garib Nagar in Bandra (East) under heavy police deployment and heightened security arrangements.
This marks the third consecutive day of the demolition drive, which aims to clear illegal encroachments along railway land. The operation had been temporarily halted after tensions escalated on Wednesday, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel.
To ensure safety and prevent further unrest, a significant police force was deployed in the area. Barricades were set up, and movement was restricted to allow the demolition to proceed without disruption.
The anti-encroachment initiative by Western Railway is part of a broader effort to reclaim railway land and ensure safety along the tracks. Authorities have stated that the drive will continue until all encroachments are removed.
Local residents expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting the removal of illegal structures while others voiced concerns over the lack of alternative housing for those affected. The authorities have assured that due process is being followed.
