Guwahati: Kunki Chowdhury, the youngest candidate in the electoral fray representing the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), faced defeat at the hands of her rival Vijay Kumar Gupta (70), a seasoned BJP worker. Despite the loss, Chowdhury expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of the Guwahati Central constituency for their support, acknowledging that she was "new to politics" and had "less than a month" to connect with the electorate.
Landslide Victory for BJP Candidate
Gupta, for whom Union Home Minister Amit Shah had to campaign on the streets with a rally, defeated Chowdhury by a massive margin of over 60,000 votes. The electoral battle in this constituency was one of the most animated during the campaign, dominated by a charged narrative around Assamese-speaking versus Hindi-speaking identity.
Kunki Chowdhury's Response After Defeat
In a video message posted on her official social media handles, Chowdhury said, "I am very new to politics. I got less than a month to meet the people in the constituency and have been able to convince the people to a great extent. I am overwhelmed by the kind of support I have received. I would like to assure the people that I will always stand by them for their interest. I will raise my voice for a solution to the problems of the constituency."
Vijay Kumar Gupta's Commitment
Meanwhile, Gupta, while thanking the people for their mandate, said he would work for the betterment of the constituency in every possible way, including solving existing issues. He pledged to address the concerns of the residents and ensure development in the region.
The Guwahati Central constituency saw a highly charged campaign, with identity politics taking center stage. The results reflect the strong support for the BJP candidate, who had the backing of top party leaders. Kunki Chowdhury's performance, despite her short campaign period, was noted as a spirited effort by a newcomer in politics.
