Akhilesh Yadav Accuses BJP Government of Driving Booth Level Officers to Suicide Through Voter List Pressure
In a scathing indictment of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav declared on Monday that intense pressure to tamper with electoral rolls is pushing Booth Level Officers (BLOs) involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 to take their own lives. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister labeled these tragic deaths as the BJP's "Paap ka Mahapaap" (the greatest sin of all sins), asserting that the party will inevitably face consequences for its actions.
Fatehpur Suicide Case Highlights Extreme Stress on BLOs
Akhilesh Yadav's statement followed the heartbreaking discovery of 50-year-old BLO Akhilesh Savita's body hanging inside a government primary school in Aliyabad village, Fatehpur, on Saturday evening. Police recovered a suicide note from the scene, which indicated that Savita was under severe stress due to his ongoing SIR duties. Disturbingly, reports emerged that he had been denied leave for his daughter's wedding, compounding his mental anguish.
The suicide note, titled 'Jeevanmukti' (liberation from life), poignantly illustrated the mounting pressures faced by BLOs. Akhilesh Yadav emphasized that senior officials' refusal to grant leave for such a significant family event exemplified the insensitivity pervading the administration under BJP rule.
Systematic Pressure to Manipulate Voter Lists
According to Akhilesh Yadav, BLOs have been working under extreme stress around the clock for months. He outlined a two-pronged coercion strategy allegedly employed by the BJP government:
- Deletion of Genuine Voters: BLOs are being pressured to remove legitimate names from electoral rolls using Form 7.
- Addition of Fake Voters: Subsequently, they are forced to insert fraudulent names into voter lists through Form 6.
"Such pressures are leading the BLOs to take the extreme step and end their life," Akhilesh stated in his official release, condemning what he described as a systematic assault on electoral integrity.
Appeal to BLOs and Condemnation of BJP's 'Despotism'
Akhilesh Yadav appealed directly to the distressed BLOs, urging them not to lose hope and to continue performing their duties diligently. He drew parallels to historical precedents, noting that governments which turn against their own people eventually collapse. "Negative energies like the BJP too have an end. The height of despotism also marks the start of disintegration of such negativity," he proclaimed.
The Samajwadi Party leader also criticized senior officials supervising the BLOs for their callous disregard toward subordinates' personal needs. He argued that the BJP's extreme insensitivity has trickled down to government officials, who fail to comprehend the emotional and logistical burdens associated with family milestones like a daughter's wedding.
This controversy underscores the intense political tensions in Uttar Pradesh as electoral processes come under scrutiny, with human costs now tragically entering the fray.
