Major Relief for Andhra Pradesh Farmers as Power Connections Fast-Tracked

In a significant development aimed at supporting the agricultural community, the power distribution companies (discoms) in Andhra Pradesh have announced a comprehensive plan to address the backlog of pending applications for new agricultural electricity connections. The state government has directed these utilities to clear all existing applications by the end of this month, with a commitment to make these connections operational within a strict two-month timeframe.

Thousands of Cultivators to Benefit from Timely Power Supply

This initiative is expected to provide substantial relief to thousands of farmers across Andhra Pradesh who have been awaiting reliable power supply for irrigation purposes. According to official estimates, discoms have formulated a time-bound strategy to approve a total of 46,113 pending applications statewide. This action follows explicit government directives to prioritize the grounding of these connections by expediting the procurement of essential infrastructure materials.

Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar addressed the media, explaining that the backlog primarily resulted from critical shortages of transformers, poles, and related hardware components. "We have instructed the discoms to place orders worth approximately ₹250 crore for the necessary procurement. Tenders and supply arrangements are being fast-tracked to prevent any further delays," the minister stated.

Addressing Historical Backlogs and Current Challenges

Minister Ravi Kumar highlighted that during the previous YSRCP administration, nearly 50,000 applications were left unresolved. "By the time the coalition government assumed office, thousands of farmers were still waiting. Since then, discoms have sanctioned 1.12 lakh agricultural connections, including clearing the backlog," he noted. With these recent additions, the total number of agricultural service connections in the state has now increased to 22.30 lakh.

However, challenges persist as fresh applications submitted since January 2025 remain pending in several administrative circles. Although regulations mandate that connections be released within two months of application, delays in inspections, estimates, and execution—partly due to a shortage of Assistant Engineers—have hindered progress.

Transformer Shortages and Future Requirements

A critical issue remains the inadequate stock of transformers. Current data reveals the availability of 25 kVA transformers:

  • 7,382 in the Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (EPDCL)
  • 266 in the Central Power Distribution Company Limited (CPDCL)
  • Only 88 in the Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL)

Officials estimate that at least 10,000 additional transformers will be required to clear the pending applications and meet future agricultural demand effectively.

Strict Timelines and Government Oversight

Minister Ravi Kumar has directed discoms to adhere strictly to the established timelines. "We have instructed them to bring all pending agricultural connections online within two months. Materials are being arranged systematically, and estimates are being sanctioned without unnecessary delay," he emphasized.

This proactive initiative is anticipated to significantly ease the burden on farmers ahead of crucial irrigation cycles by ensuring a reliable and timely power supply for agricultural operations, thereby enhancing productivity and supporting rural livelihoods across Andhra Pradesh.
