Annamalai Exit Sparks Mass Resignations in Tamil Nadu BJP

NEW DELHI: The departure of K Annamalai from the Bharatiya Janata Party did not remain an isolated incident for long. Within hours of his exit, Tamil Nadu BJP vice-president Karu Nagarajan along with 15 other party functionaries submitted their resignations, casting doubt on the party's capacity to manage the aftermath.

Resignations Follow Annamalai's Exit

These resignations occurred despite state BJP president Nainar Nagendran's earlier assertion that Annamalai's departure would have no impact on the organisation. The swift series of exits has fueled speculation that the BJP might face a broader exodus in Tamil Nadu, particularly among cadres and local leaders who regarded Annamalai as the party's most prominent face in the state. Signs of such loyalty were evident months ago when posters bearing slogans like Our Leader, Come and Lead Us appeared across Chennai ahead of his birthday celebrations.

Annamalai's New Political Movement Gains Traction

Annamalai's new venture, We The Leader, has already shown early momentum. The movement claimed to have attracted over eight lakh volunteers within hours of its launch, underscoring the support base he commands beyond the BJP's formal structure. While Annamalai has stopped short of announcing a political party, he has outlined the principles he wants the movement to champion. There is no permanent MLA, MP or minister. This includes myself. This is going to be our goal and motto of our political movement, he said, positioning the initiative as an alternative to personality-driven and dynastic politics.

Unanswered Questions Remain

Despite the initial enthusiasm, key questions remain unanswered. Beyond broad promises of political reform, Annamalai has not laid out a clear ideological framework for the movement or indicated when, or if, it will evolve into a full-fledged political party. The ambiguity leaves observers wondering about the long-term trajectory of his political ambitions.

Impact on BJP in Tamil Nadu

The resignations and Annamalai's new movement pose a significant challenge to the BJP's presence in Tamil Nadu. The party now faces the task of rebuilding its state unit while countering the appeal of a leader who has demonstrated considerable grassroots support. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the BJP can stem the tide of defections or if Annamalai's movement will further erode its base in the state.
