Asansol murder: Congress alleges post-poll violence, two detained

A 43-year-old man was allegedly attacked and beaten to death by miscreants on Friday night near his home at Kanyapur, Asansol, in West Burdwan, following which police detained two persons. Congress leaders said the victim was a party supporter and that the assailants were Trinamool Congress supporters.

Incident triggers tension

The incident triggered tension in Asansol on Saturday and could be the first instance of post-poll violence following a peaceful first phase of voting on Thursday. Police said they have started a probe.

Victim identified

The victim, Debdip Chaterjee (43), lived in Kanyapur housing Naba Anyanya apartment. His body has been sent for post-mortem at Asansol district hospital.

Debesh Chakraborty, district Congress president, said those involved should be immediately arrested. Police have detained two persons in connection with the murder and are investigating the case.
