GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday attributed the Congress party's electoral rout to its attempt to politicize the death of singer Zubeen Garg. He argued that state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi faced a "crushing" defeat after dragging his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, into a passport controversy.
CM Criticizes Congress Tactics
"No party should bring Bhupen Hazarika or Zubeen Garg into poll manifestos. Congress sought votes in Zubeen's name because they lacked public support. It was a cheap political tactic," Sarma said.
Gaurav Gogoi's Defeat
On Gaurav Gogoi's debut debacle on his home turf of Jorhat, Sarma blamed a news conference where Congress leader Pawan Khera accused Riniki of holding multiple passports and keeping assets in foreign countries. "Usually, people of Assam do not appreciate it if someone from outside talks about their daughters. People of Bengal would not have liked it if I had indulged in personal attacks on Mamata Banerjee," he added.
