Bagalkot Braces for Tension as Right-Wing Protest Looms
The city of Bagalkot is on edge as right-wing organizations are actively preparing for a protest scheduled for February 26, while the local police department is taking stringent measures to prevent any potential unrest. This development comes in the wake of a recent incident of stone-pelting during the Shivaji Jayanti procession, which has escalated tensions in the region.
Police Issue Stern Warnings and Extend Prohibition Orders
In response to the planned protest, the district administration has extended a prohibition order that was initially imposed on February 20, now lasting until February 28. This order is specifically limited to the old Bagalkot area, while restrictions have been lifted in Navanagar. Superintendent of Police Siddhartha Goyal issued a clear warning, stating, "Due to the prohibition, there is no permission for the protest. Strict action is assured against any violations." Officials have also taken to social media to appeal to the public, urging them not to attend the protest on February 26.
Community Demands and Police Precautions
Following the stone-pelting incident, a meeting of Hindu communities demanded the arrest of all individuals involved in the violence. Meanwhile, the police department has issued notices to more than 150 leaders from various organizations across the district. These notices explicitly state that strict legal action will be taken against anyone who disrupts peace and order by violating the prohibition. This proactive approach aims to deter potential agitators and maintain public safety.
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented
In anticipation of the protest, tight police security has been implemented throughout Bagalkot. Police forces are maintaining a vigilant watch at strategic locations across the city. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the old Bagalkot area, including key zones like Killa. Notably, barricades have been removed in the Killa areas to facilitate movement and prevent congestion, but this move is coupled with increased surveillance to monitor any suspicious activities.
