Rail Services in Bihar Disrupted for Essential Safety Upgrade
Rail services across parts of Bihar experienced significant disruptions on Saturday as the Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) carried out critical non-interlocking (NI) work. This technical operation resulted in the cancellation, diversion, and rescheduling of several passenger trains, impacting travel plans for many commuters.
Cancellations and Diversions Implemented
According to Saraswati Chandra, the chief public relations officer (CPRO) of ECR, one pair of passenger trains operating between Kiul and Mokama was cancelled for the day. This cancellation was necessary to facilitate the non-interlocking operations, which are part of completing the automatic block signalling system on the Mokama–Kiul section. Chandra emphasized that this infrastructure upgrade is aimed at improving both safety and operational efficiency for future rail journeys.
Several other passenger trains passing through the affected section were either diverted via the Bakhtiyarpur–Biharsharif–Sheikhpura–Kiul route or rescheduled. These changes were implemented to avoid operational conflicts and ensure the smooth execution of the technical work, as explained by the CPRO. The adjustments were crucial to maintain overall rail network integrity during the upgrade process.
Passenger Inconvenience and Official Assurance
Passengers faced considerable inconvenience due to the sudden alterations in train schedules. Many travelers expressed frustration over the unexpected disruptions to their plans. However, railway officials maintained that the work is essential for enhancing rail connectivity and ensuring safer journeys in the long term.
They assured that the non-interlocking work is expected to be completed within the scheduled timeframe, with normal train operations likely to resume from Sunday. This temporary disruption, officials noted, is a necessary step toward modernizing the rail infrastructure and preventing potential accidents through improved signalling systems.
Background on the Infrastructure Project
The non-interlocking work is a key component of the broader initiative to upgrade rail safety measures in the region. By implementing the automatic block signalling system, the East Central Railway aims to reduce human error and increase the efficiency of train movements. This project aligns with national efforts to enhance railway safety standards across India, particularly in high-traffic corridors like the Mokama–Kiul section.
Railway authorities have been proactive in communicating these changes to the public, although the short notice led to some challenges for passengers. The Danapur division has a history of undertaking such technical upgrades to keep pace with growing rail demands and technological advancements.
As the work progresses, officials are monitoring the situation closely to minimize further disruptions. They encourage passengers to check real-time updates from official sources to stay informed about any last-minute changes. The completion of this project is anticipated to bring long-term benefits, including reduced travel times and enhanced safety protocols for all rail users in Bihar.
