BJD Stages Protest in Cuttack Against Metro Project Cancellation
Members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) organized a significant demonstration at Buxi Bazar in Cuttack on Wednesday, vehemently opposing the state government's recent decision to terminate the Metro rail project that was intended to connect Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Hundreds of party workers gathered at this bustling marketplace, raising slogans and accusing the government of obstructing a crucial infrastructure initiative. They argued that this project would have revolutionized urban mobility in the twin cities, addressing long-standing transportation challenges.
Mayor Subhash Singh Condemns the Decision
Cuttack Mayor Subhash Singh expressed strong disapproval, stating, "The metro project was launched under the leadership of former Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik in 2023, with an initial allocation of Rs 400 crore. Preliminary work had already commenced, making it more than just a proposal—it was a visionary plan for the future. Halting it midway is a profound humiliation for the residents of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar." He further emphasized that Metro rail systems are operational in over 25 states across India, questioning why Odisha should be excluded and urging the BJP government to resume and complete the project promptly.
Government's Stance on Feasibility and Funding
In response, Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan clarified the government's position, explaining, "We are currently reviewing the feasibility and financial viability of the project. At present, it represents a loss-making venture. The previous BJD administration failed to consult the central government, and the proposal lacked clarity regarding execution and long-term funding. Our focus is on exploring more practical and sustainable urban transportation solutions for the region."
Economic and Social Implications Highlighted
BJD Cuttack district president Prafulla Singh echoed these concerns, underscoring the broader economic impact. "The Metro is a symbol of development that would enhance connectivity, attract industries, and create numerous employment opportunities. Canceling such a project is a major setback for Odisha's overall growth," he asserted. Singh added that the project would have alleviated traffic congestion in the twin cities, benefiting millions of commuters across the state.
The protest highlights ongoing tensions between political factions over infrastructure development, with the BJD advocating for the restoration of a project they view as essential for urban transformation and economic progress in Odisha.
