BJP Candidate, Mother of RG Kar Victim, Files Nomination in Symbolic Saree
In a poignant political moment, the mother of the RG Kar rape-and-murder victim, now a BJP candidate, filed her nomination for the upcoming elections at the Barrackpore Sub-Divisional Officer's administrative office on Thursday. She once again used her attire to convey a powerful message, wearing a saree inscribed with the phrase 'Shaktirupena Sangsthita,' which translates to 'embodiment of strength.' This symbolic gesture underscores her resilience and determination in the face of personal tragedy.
High-Profile Support and Spiritual Prelude
The candidate was accompanied by former Union minister Smriti Irani and Tripura's former chief minister Biplab Deb, highlighting the BJP's support for her candidacy. Earlier in the day, before submitting her nomination, she visited a Shiva-Kali temple near her residence to offer prayers. She was joined by her husband, local BJP leaders, and supporters, setting a solemn tone for the proceedings.
A rally was then organized along BT Road up to the traffic crossing, with BJP workers and supporters raising slogans such as 'We want justice.' This public display of solidarity emphasized the campaign's focus on seeking accountability and change.
Personal Significance of Nomination Date
Explaining her choice of April 9 for filing the nomination, the candidate revealed its deep personal significance. She stated, "It was on a 9th that my child came into my life, and she was taken away from me on another 9th. That is why I chose this date." This emotional connection adds a layer of personal narrative to her political journey, resonating with voters on a human level.
Political Statements and Emotional Moments
While heading to file her nomination, the candidate reiterated her call to oust the Trinamool Congress government from the state, positioning herself as a catalyst for change. Addressing the gathering, Smriti Irani said, "This mother is not just a BJP candidate; she represents every woman in Bengal. Under her leadership, Bengal will get justice." During Irani's speech, the victim's mother broke down in tears, highlighting the emotional weight of her campaign.
Financial Disclosures and Previous Symbolism
According to the affidavit filed, the total value of her movable assets is Rs 19,02,432. This includes several bank fixed deposits, savings accounts, and jewellery. Among these assets, she owns a car worth Rs 8 lakh, jointly with her husband. Notably, the car was originally purchased by their deceased daughter and later transferred to their names. She currently has Rs 20,000 in cash. The total value of her husband's movable assets stands at Rs 35,96,350.
Earlier, the BJP candidate drew attention by campaigning in a saree with the slogan 'Merudanda Bikri Nei' (My spine is not for sale), further cementing her use of attire as a tool for political messaging. This consistent symbolism reflects her commitment to integrity and strength in the political arena.
