BJP Leader Accuses Himachal Congress Government of Betraying Power Promise

BJP state spokesperson Sandipani Bhardwaj launched a sharp critique against the Congress-led government in Himachal Pradesh on Friday, alleging it is preparing to increase electricity tariffs despite its electoral promise of providing 300 units of free power during the last legislative assembly elections. Bhardwaj asserted that this move highlights a significant gap between the party's pre-election assurances and its post-election actions.

Potential Tariff Hike and Financial Impact

According to Bhardwaj, electricity rates in the state could rise by approximately one rupee per unit. If implemented, this hike would affect lakhs of consumers across Himachal Pradesh, potentially imposing an additional financial burden of nearly Rs 1,200 crore annually on the state's residents. He emphasized that such an increase would further escalate the cost of living for ordinary citizens, compounding existing economic pressures.

Electricity Board's Financial Request and Alleged Mismanagement

The BJP leader pointed out that the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board has reportedly sought around Rs 8,593 crore from the regulatory commission for the upcoming financial year. This figure is notably higher than last year's request, which Bhardwaj cited as evidence that the state government is attempting to shift the burden of its economic mismanagement onto the public. He argued that this reflects poor fiscal planning and a disregard for consumer welfare.

Changes in Power Supply System and Market Purchases

Bhardwaj also highlighted that the state government has altered the previous system under which electricity generated by public sector undertakings was directly supplied to the electricity board. Due to this new arrangement, the board may now be compelled to purchase more expensive power from the open market, a factor that could drive tariffs even higher. He criticized this policy shift as detrimental to affordable energy access.

Accusations of Forgotten Promises and Political Opposition

Accusing the Congress of forgetting its election manifesto and the "10 Guarantees" it pledged after coming to power, Bhardwaj warned that if electricity prices are increased, the BJP will mount strong opposition both on the streets and in the legislative assembly. He called on the government to honor its commitments and avoid placing additional financial strain on the people of Himachal Pradesh.
