BJP Seals Crucial Four-Party Alliance in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully finalized a four-party alliance in Assam for the forthcoming state assembly elections. This strategic coalition marks the return of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold after a hiatus of five years, strengthening the ruling party's position in the northeastern state.

Alliance Composition and Key Partners

The alliance comprises the BJP along with three regional parties: the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and the Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha (RHJM). While AGP and RHJM have been steadfast allies of the BJP for over a decade, the re-entry of BPF is a notable move that could reshape the electoral dynamics in Assam.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially announced the formation of this coalition on Thursday, stating, "The alliance with AGP, BPF and Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha was finalized on Wednesday night. The structure of the alliance will be announced once it is approved by BJP’s central committee." This indicates that while the broad agreement is in place, finer details regarding seat distribution and campaign strategies are pending formal endorsement from the party's high command.

Seat-Sharing Arrangements and Electoral History

Although Sarma refrained from disclosing specific seat-sharing numbers, he provided crucial insights into the arrangement with AGP. He confirmed that AGP would contest a similar number of seats as it did in the 2021 elections, where the regional party fielded candidates in 25 constituencies but managed to secure only nine victories. Importantly, Sarma emphasized that there would be no friendly contests between BJP and AGP in any seat, a departure from his earlier statement on February 27, where he had suggested the possibility of such contests in seats where neither party was willing to concede.

The electoral track records of the alliance partners reveal interesting trends:

  • BJP: In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP contested 84 seats and won 60. In 2021, it increased its candidature to 93 seats but its tally remained static at 60.
  • AGP: A key BJP ally, AGP performed strongly in 2016, winning 14 out of 24 seats contested. However, its performance dipped in 2021, securing only 9 out of 25 seats.
  • BPF: Under the leadership of Hagrama Mohilary, BPF contested 16 seats in 2016 and won 12. The party's alliance with BJP did not continue into the 2021 polls.
  • UPPL: The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), led by Pramod Boro, joined the NDA in the 2021 elections and won 6 out of 11 seats contested.

Strategic Implications and Regional Focus

The inclusion of Rabha Hasong Joutha Mancha in the alliance is particularly significant for constituencies with Scheduled Tribe reservations. The party is likely to contest in key seats such as Boko-Chaygaon, Dudhnoi, and Goalpara West, which could help the NDA consolidate its support among tribal communities in Assam.

This four-party alliance represents a calculated effort by the BJP to broaden its electoral base and mitigate anti-incumbency factors. By bringing BPF back into the NDA and reinforcing ties with long-standing allies, the ruling party aims to create a unified front against opposition forces in the state. The final seat-sharing agreement, once approved by the BJP central committee, will be closely watched as it will determine the practical implementation of this political strategy.

As Assam prepares for the upcoming assembly elections, this alliance sets the stage for a highly contested political battle, with the BJP-led coalition seeking to leverage combined strengths to secure another term in power.
