The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept much of West Bengal in the 2026 assembly elections, but the Kultali seat remained firmly with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Incumbent MLA Ganesh Chandra Mondal secured a landslide victory, polling 1,46,435 votes to defeat BJP candidate Madhabi Mahalder by a massive margin of 59,276 votes. Mahalder finished a distant second with 87,159 votes. Mondal maintained an overwhelming lead throughout the counting process.
Constituency Profile
Kultali is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a Scheduled Caste (SC) category seat located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Jaynagar parliamentary constituency, which comprises seven Assembly segments.
Historical Voting Patterns
In the 2021 assembly election, Ganesh Chandra Mondal from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. Prior to that, in 2011 and 2016, the seat was won by Ram Sankar Halder from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). In 2021, AITC secured 51.57% of the vote share, while the BJP, which fielded Mintu Halder, received 30.82% of the votes.
This year, the BJP's strong performance across the state did not translate into a victory in Kultali, where Mondal's personal popularity and the party's organizational strength proved decisive. The result underscores the TMC's continued hold on certain strongholds despite the BJP's overall sweep.
