The 2026 Assam Assembly election has delivered a decisive verdict in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the ruling party securing an outright majority on its own and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comfortably crossing the halfway mark. The result not only ensures a third consecutive term for the BJP in the state but also signals a consolidation of its political dominance in Assam.
Historic Victory for BJP
State BJP president Dilip Saikia described the victory as “historic”, calling it a validation of the party’s governance record and a “testimony to the fulfilment” of its 2021 election manifesto. With the BJP winning 67 seats and leading in several others, the party has crossed the majority mark of 64 in the 126-member Assembly. Its allies — the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) — have added to the NDA’s tally, further strengthening the coalition's position.
Mandate Reflects Endorsement of Governance
The scale of the mandate reflects a clear endorsement of the BJP’s governance narrative over the past decade, particularly under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Party leaders argue that voters compared the NDA’s tenure with what they termed decades of Congress rule, ultimately favouring continuity and stability over change. For the opposition, led by the Indian National Congress, the outcome marks another setback in a state where it once held significant influence. Despite attempts to build a broader alliance and mount a campaign around anti-incumbency, the Congress and its partners struggled to translate discontent into electoral gains, with their seat share remaining limited.
